10 Best Horror Movies On Netflix India: Part 2

scary movies

There’s such a diverse mix of good, quality content Netflix has to offer. Last week, we plucked out some of the best horror movies on Netflix for you all. This week we have some more great titles worth your time.

1. Evil Dead (2013)

Good looking Mia and her friends discover a strange thing in the cellar of their secluded, creepy cabin. Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead is more of a modern re-working on the seminal horror concept. The decision to keep away from CG pays off well for the film once the evil is let loose. The group dynamics are also far better than what we come to expect from regular slasher films. The gore-fest scenes keep us on our toes. However, it lacks some of the original one’s bite. Alvarez gets a bit too serious. Moreover, it lacks the gleefully camp elements that still make us rewatch Sam Raimi’s version.

2. Let Me In (2010)

Considering Hollywood’s long-standing history of messy remakes of great foreign films, I must say Let Me In is a very good Americanized version. This poetic vampire horror is set in the 1980s and revolves around an unhappy, bulled 12-year-old boy Owen. A strangely attractive girl enters Owen’s isolated world. She and her mysterious carer move into the apartment next door. The girl is a hungry vampire, who also remains affectionate to her new friend Owen. Anyone who cherishes the beauty and pain of growing up could definitely appreciate this film. Of course, you also have to stomach the blood-splattering violence.

3. The Silenced (2015)

This Korean mystery with lightweight horror elements is set in a 1938 boarding school. It was the era when Japan’s rule of Korea slowly came to an end. The protagonist of the tale is transferred to the remote boarding school. As expected, she stumbles onto a secret, waiting to be uncovered. The Silenced, although has no ingenious mystery, strives to maintain a dark atmosphere that’s devoid of cheap scares. It’s a fairly entertaining chiller. Those expecting a powerful, scary film can look elsewhere.

4. Sinister (2012)

Scott Derrickson’s occult horror thriller reminds us of the bleak imagery of J-Horror trend-setters The Ring and Pulse. There are also shades of Stephen King with the protagonist becoming overly obsessive. A true-crime writer moves in with family to a murder house to work on a new book. As he investigates the events in the house, freshly disturbing events begin to happen. The answer to the mystery points to an evil, supernatural creature. Sinister occasionally delves into cliches, but its creepy atmospherics are hard to shake off.

5. Creep (2015)

Patrick Brice’s minimalist horror is about a naive young man Aaron responding to a Craigslist ad from a creep named Josef. Unlike most of found-footage horror flicks, Creep doesn’t rely on jump scares. It impeccably builds a sense of dread, while also splashing a fine dose of black humor. Brice surprisingly undercuts some of the cliched elements of the sub genre. Watch the film for Mark Duplass’ master manipulator character Josef. His superb performance makes us overlook some of the plot-holes.

6. Jaws (1975)

Steven Spielberg’s greatest blockbuster entertainment taps on our primordial sense of fear. The tricky editing and sudden looming of shock images derives as much dread and tension as the great white shark.  Spielberg’s superb orchestration of fear is perfectly balanced with the trio’s magnetic performances. It’s an impeccable mixture of set-pieces and well-defined story. John Williams’ unforgettable soundtrack soars up the menace and frenzy to unbearable levels. Four plus decades since its release, this populist American cinema still possesses the power to shock us.

7. Insidious Chapter 2 (2013)

James Wan’s Insidious Chapter 2 is as gimmicky and uneven as its predecessor. Nevertheless, it manages to terrorize us with inventive jump scares. The story picks up exactly where it left in the first part. The narrative jumps back and forth as the Josh family tries to chase away the ghost living in Josh’s body, back to its astral kingdom. Like The Conjuring, this is solely designed to satisfy the fans of ‘poltergeist’ scares. And director Wan very well triumphs in that aspect.

8. Oculus (2013)

Mike Flanagan’s Oculus, although a derivative ghost story, conjures something truly haunting. The MacGuffin is a mirror named ‘Lasser Glass’. It has ruined the lives of Kaylie and her brother Tim, and killed their parents. The grown-ups go to their childhood home, set up state-of-the-art equipment to weed out the evil force inside the mirror. While the backstory is full of clichés, the elements of horror are far better than the usual ‘boo’ moments. The scares consist of some good, subtle mind games.

9. Scream (1996)

Wes Craven’s Scream is one of the most witty and cleverly-written horror films. It pokes fun at the slasher flick conventions, while also creating a genuinely scary mayhem. The story revolves around young Sidney Prescott. A crazy, horror-movie obsessed serial-killer stalks her. The narrative, as one could guess, is all about unmasking the identity of the killer. The self-mocking style, in-jokes, and ghastly games offer pure trashy fun. The other parts of the franchise were too contorted and self-aware to cloak its badness.

10. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

If you are not a fan of found-footage sub-genre, Adam Robitel’s film may not change your opinion. However, Deborah Logan offers an unnerving horror movie experience, considering the long list of underwhelming found-footage horror. The elderly Deborah Logan is in early stages of Alzheimer’s. Her daughter doubles up the role of a caretaker. Deborah gets lot worse as an unexplainable phenomenon takes over. Apart from the routine, clichéd third-act, the film is suspenseful.

That’s that! These are the best horror movies Netflix has to offer right now. But wait! We’re not done. We’ll come back with some more great horror movies out there on the streaming platform.
