8. Dhruva Natchathiram
After Gautam Menon and actor Suriya’s two successful ventures together, the duo discussed about a spy-thriller franchise. Dhruva Natchathiram (Pole Star) was officially launched back in 2013. But after a series of postponements and creative differences with Suriya, Menon delved into other projects. In November 2016, Gautam revived the project with Vikram. The production began this January, with an exciting, crisp teaser released. Dhruva Natchathiram releases August 2017.
9. Kavan
After a couple of underwhelming pulp fictions, cinematographer/director K.V. Anand is back with Kavan (Catapult). Anand calls the film a David vs Goliath: the story of one common man taking down a criminal network. Vijay Sethupathi and Premam-fame Madonna Sebastian play the lead roles. A high-budget AGS production, Kavan should release around March end/April.
10. Vikram Vedha
The husband-wife director duo Pushkar and Gayathri’s film tells the tale of an encounter specialist in pursuit of a deadly gangster. Inspired by the old folktales of Vikramathithan, R Madhavan plays the encounter cop while versatile actor Vijay Sethupathi will transform into a middle-aged gangster. Officially launched in November 2016, the film may release later this year.
11. Ennai Noki Paayum Thota
Gautam Vasudev Menon’s Ennai Noki Paayum Thota has been in the making for a year. Touted as a romantic thriller, the film’s trailer had all the distinct as well as signature traits of a Gautam Menon film. Dhanush and Mega Akash play the lead roles. Jomon T. John, best known for his work in Malayalam films Charlie, Ennu Ninte Moideen, will helm the cinematography.
12. Magalir Mattum
Director Bramma’s second venture Magalir Mattum, a female-centric script, stars Jyotika in the lead role. Shot across Agra and UP, the film is apparently about a documentary filmmaker fighting for a cause. Yesteryear actresses Bhanupriya, Saranya, and Urvasi play supporting roles. Bramma proved his mettle with debut feature Kuttram Kadithal, which won a National Award. The director said in an interview that Magalir Mattum will have a wider reach than his previous subtle drama.
Kamal Haasan’s bilingual Sabash Naidu, Manikandan’s Kadaisi Vivasayi and Vetrimaaran’s epic gangster film Vada Chennai (on the lines of Gangs of Wasseypur) are important projects under production. However, it is little unclear if these films will see a release in 2017.
