Synopsis: Vees Mhanje Vees follows the story of a young college girl Shailaja, who returns to her native village to reopen the school that her ailing father – a retired school teacher – had started. The film trails her journey as she struggles against all odds to keep the school running and fulfill the promise made to her father.

The subject of Vees Mhanje Vees is very close to my heart. True education is learning how to deal with the world, not just about acquiring bookish knowledge. Sadly we no longer attach any importance to this kind of education. At a time when small schools in remote villages in India are facing closure simply because they do not have 20 children, Vees Mhanje Vees will bring back the focus to education in its truest sense,” says director Uday Bhandarkar.

The film features Mrunmayee Godbole in a lead role, child actors Parth Bhalerao (of Bhoothnath fame), Mrunal Jadhav (of Drishyam fame), Mihir Mule and Arun Nalawade. Nalwade co-produced the Marathi film Shwaas, which was nominated for Oscars in the foreign film category in 2004.

When I passed out of FTII, I was looking for films to shoot as a cinematographer, I heard a lot of scripts but couldn’t find anything I could really relate with. Then Uday called me for this. And when I heard the idea, I could totally relate to it. Uday was directing his first film at the age of almost 55 – 56 and it was a huge inspiration for me because we shot at a lot of places – various villages and he was very patient and calm,” says cinematographer Avinash Arun (of Killa fame) who won the Maharashtra State Award for this film.

Vees Mhanje Vees is set to release across Maharashtra with English subtitles on June 10. Here’s the trailer:
