It has been a dull two years for American cinema. Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic put a halt to traditional methods of viewing films, films and movie studios have been wary of releasing big films and franchise players. Indie films and arthouse fare has been hit even worse, as they’ve been forced to forgo prestige film festivals and head to streaming services, with little to no fanfare. With audiences wary of stepping out of their homes even in the wake of receding infections in 2021, even highly anticipated films like Dune, No Time To Die and Black Widow drew in modest numbers. These films that had been pushed back from initial release in 2020, failed to do the kind of business that was usually expected of them. Only with the release of Marvel’s blockbuster No Way Home, did some semblance of normalcy return to the movie-making machines.
Well, 2022 promises to change that. Both film studios and streaming giants promise big, sprawling movies, counting on the renewed excitement of things returning to normal to stoke audience interest.
